Here for your consideration is a fine Australian Opalized Osmunda Fern cabochon. This very rare Paleosmunda is a primitive member of the Osmundoidae from the Permian Period (approximately 290 million years old) found in Central Queensland, Australia. It is a fern, species: Paleosmunda williansoni. It formed when a fern died and was buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the fern, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to opalized stone. This cab exhibits large random ribbons of opalized leaves.
High polish front and back. Standard radius dome. Natural - Not stabilized or sealed - some tiny natural holes are present.
This cabochon will make a beautiful pendant, either wire wrapped, bezel set. It’s quite an heirloom collectors piece as well. Use your imagination. We LOVE creative people!
